"Care Recieved"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Adult Mental Health Ward 2K Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

For several days last month I was treated brilliantly by all involved in my care from the ED, during transport to Ward 2K( Wilson Transport) and while in Ward 2K.

I felt I was well looked after and my every concern was heard. I was fully involved in my care plan and my opinion was valued. I was able to partake in a group therapy DBT program where the psychologist took time to personally explain 29 years worth of confusion to me and explain DBT in a way that was Neurodivergent friendly.

I'd like to pass on my absolute gratitude onto the Occupational Therapy Assistant Bec ( in Ward 2K)  who discussed topics that we both had interest in, encouraged me to participate in programs which I participated in most of them as I felt supported and included by Bec. I was listened to when I needed to vent and I was supported and encouraged every step of the way. Nothing was ever a hassle to Bec and I wish I had the chance to thank her in person for her help.

Every Doctor, Nurse, Social Worker, Psychologist and Psychiatrist involved in my care was brilliant.

I hope this positive feedback is passed on as I feel it may have got lost in the not so positive points.

I have been in contact with the Royal Perth Feedback team as I sent an email asking if my incorrect EUPD diagnosis could be removed from the ' Principal Diagnosis' section as I'm Autistic and have had EUPD incorrectly put on my discharge summaries.

I spoke to someone via the phone who assured me that the positive feedback would be passed on however I was asked why I presented to ED and, I recall they said, that it wasn't Autism I presented with it was EUPD so unless you tell me why you presented the Psychiatrists won't change the diagnosis.

I reluctantly told the feedback officer why I presented and that the symptoms are a part of EUPD however I do not have EUPD and EUPD can be incorrectly be diagnosed instead of Autism.

As I felt pressured during the phone call into saying EUPD was correct as one of the principal diagnosis and I tried to explain that I wanted Autism listed in my co- existing conditions. I had to explain via email why I wanted EUPD removed from the principal diagnosis list as I felt I couldn't explain this during the phone call.

I recieved an email saying that the head Psychiatrist agreed that EUPD wasn't the principal diagnosis and CPTSD and Co- Existing Autism were the main diagnosis.

I applied through FOI and I recieved a new discharge summary showing that EUPD had been removed however Autism is not listed anywhere in the discharge summary, I requested Autism to be listed as a condition in the amended discharge summary.

I do hope this change can happen and I hope the feedback is passed onto the feeback officer- that a diagnosis by the feedback officer is not a psychiatric/ psychological evaluation and that I believe they shouldn't seemingly pressure people into agreeing with what turns out to be an incorrect opinion.

Dear Tired1234,

It was great to read that you had such a good experience with us and that the whole multidisciplinary team, noting Bec in particular, were fantastic. I can assure you that your gratitude has been shared with the staff involved in your care. Your feedback recognises the efforts of Royal Perth Bentley Group staff to provide high quality, patient-centred care and I am always delighted to read personal stories like this, describing the care our patients receive from our dedicated teams.

Despite all the positives you have shared, I am so sorry to hear of your experience interacting with our feedback team (Patient Experience). Our Patient Experience team always strive to work both empathetically and collaboratively with our patients to understand their concerns to best assist with resolving any queries and concerns raised. I wholeheartedly agree that the Patient Experience staff are not in a position to make a psychiatric/psychological evaluation or diagnosis. The team will often seek to gather detailed information from patients to best understand their concerns and work with them to try to get the best outcome possible. The Manager of Patient Experience and I sincerely apologise that you felt pressured during this process.

I was pleased to hear that your initial concerns were dealt with very promptly, and I have been assured that the Patient Experience team have been following up the changes to your discharge summary that you have requested and will be in contact with you directly to update you on the outcome.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I wish you all the best with your health care journey.

Kind Regards

Ben Noteboom
