"Birth experience"

About: Peel Health Campus / Maternity Unit

(as the patient),

My recent birth experience at Peel Health Campus was extremely disappointing. I was induced, but the midwife dismissed my pain twice, resulting in me spending my entire labour in a shared room, and not a birthing suite. I had to try to remain quiet as it was overnight and another woman was in the room. Additionally, I was alone with no support persons present my entire labour as it was after hours, so my partner wasn’t allowed to stay. I was only offered mild pain relief options such as heat packs and Panadol, and the most heartbreaking part was that my partner missed the birth of our baby, which is a moment we can never get back!!

I feel the midwife failed to care for me while I was in labour, despite requesting to be examined, showing contraction times on my phone and requesting pain relief due to the severity of the pain. These are all clear signs of active labour, that the midwife seemingly dismissed!

My experience was upsetting, and it is something no patient should have to experience from a trusted health professional.

Dear composerrw38

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. I was very sorry to read of your recent experience at Peel Health Campus and sincerely apologise that we did not meet their expectations on this occasion.

I am sorry that you felt dismissed by one of our midwifery team members after being induced and you were placed in a shared room with no support person with you. It is deeply concerning that whilst you were in labour, your partner was not allowed to be with you, resulting in your partner missing the birth of your child.

Please be reassured that all staff employed by Ramsay Health Care are required to follow the Code of Conduct, which includes ensuring communication with our patients and visitors is respectful, empathetic and professional at all times. I was saddened to read that you felt this did not occur and that you were not listened to. I have asked the manager of the Bennett ward to remind all staff of the importance of communication and the impact this can have on our patients and their loved ones.

I want to assure you I take your concerns very seriously and would like the opportunity to investigate your unfortunate experience thoroughly.

I strongly encourage you to reach out to Tracey Taylor at (08) 9531 8580 or email TaylorTracey@ramsayhealth.com.au to enable this to occur so we can better understand the circumstances of their experience.

We hope to hear from you soon and thank you again for sharing your story so that we can continually improve the care and service we provide.

Adrian Bautista
