"Lack of COVID infection control"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Late last year, I was admitted to the ED via ambulance for chest pains weeks after a COVID infection. When I was admitted, I saw few patients masked (I was the only one I observed wearing a KN94 mask, most other people were in surgical masks), a lot of people coughing their lungs out in common areas not separated from other patients. I fear more people will get sick as we now know that transmission is airborne and that it seems basic prevention strategies are no longer adopted. Please keep the infection control procedures up especially in areas where the sickest patients are.

Dear Germs,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience in the Emergency Department (ED) of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital last year. I was sorry to read of your concerns about the lack of COVID infection control you witnessed during your visit.

Please be assured we have a screening policy in place in ED to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors. If patients do not meet the need for screening or do not have symptoms it is not mandated to wear a mask.

As you have pointed out Covid is still present in our community. The WA health system has moved to ensure that all respiratory and airborne viruses are assessed and tested and then decisions about isolation and mask wearing are made.

The revised WA health guidelines can be accessed here: https://www.health.wa.gov.au/articles/a_e/coronavirus/covid19-information-for-health-professionals.

Thank you again for getting in touch. Our health service does appreciate your feedback, and we would like to reassure you of our commitment to ensure our ED remains a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Warm regards

Jodi Graham
