"Geriatric ward and rehabilitation in the home"

About: Osborne Park Hospital / Geriatric, Acute and Rehabilitation Medicine Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Geriatric, Acute and Rehabilitation Medicine (GARM)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital through emergency and the next day I was transferred, because I had a fracture, to the geriatric ward. I was there for approximately 10 days. I had a pelvic fracture. They were going to keep me longer but there was some covid cases and I was keen to get home. I came home and I was ok. I was in ward C17.

Of course they sent me home with the assurance that I would be getting rehab in the home which has what happened. The physiotherapists have come to me at home. I have so much praise for them. They were so good with me. One would come in the beginning of the week, the senior one in charge, and the assistant would come during the week. They would phone me up in the morning and tell me approximately what time they would arrive. They were so encouraging and so precise. I have nothing but praise for them.

Particularly, it was so good to have this in the comfort of your own home, feeling at ease. Kate, she noted everything I needed. Like a chair and crutches, and a toilet seat raised up. There was no difficulty at all. They asked what I required and looked and I’m sure they knew what I needed, but they asked me too and so I got that. It was reassuring and comforting.

That went on for about 8 weeks. In about the 7th week the senior physio, Kate, she organized my continuation of the therapy with Osborne Park hospital, by which time I had improved to the desired level. She organized it so efficiently, there was no time lapse between doing it at home and going to Osborne the following week.

The following week, I went into Osborne Park, and they assessed me and I got a program from them for the next 3 weeks. My progress is really good. I have the number for rehab in the home, in case I need to talk to the physio, but I don’t have any issues. I have also got a number from Osborne Park if I need it and I already have my appointment fixed. I’m still using the equipment that was supplied to me. They said I could keep it as long as I required and I can return it again, so again I’m very happy, pleased and grateful.

Dear watercc36,

I'm so glad to hear about your positive experience with the rehabilitation services and the care you received both in hospital and at home. It’s wonderful that the physiotherapists, especially Kate, were so supportive and thorough in assessing your needs. It sounds like she was not only professional but also truly compassionate, ensuring you had everything you required for a comfortable recovery at home. It's reassuring to know that you felt so at ease throughout the process.

The coordination between Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Osborne Park Hospital, and the smooth transition from home rehab to further treatment, really seems to have made a big difference in your recovery. Plus, having access to the necessary equipment and being able to keep it for as long as needed is such a thoughtful touch.

Wishing you continued success with your rehabilitation, and I’m happy to hear you’re doing well! Kate clearly played an important role in your journey, and it's great to see that kind of care.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
