"Recent admission from ED to ASU/ 6G /then AMU"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Acute Medical Unit Royal Perth Hospital / Acute Surgical Ward 6G Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I attended ED dept. at RPH in December 2024. I knew it was quite a serious health problem so was very stressed. I was only waiting in ED for approx 30 minutes before I was taken through, I was admitted to ASU, everyone was very caring and showed a lot of empathy.

I had a procedure the following day in theatre and then was told by my surgeon that I needed a complex  operation and it couldn't wait, so I was transferred to ward 6G. Two days later I had my operation and woke up on the ward with tubes and lines everywhere you can think of, it was very frightening.

The doctors and nursing staff were constantly reassuring and I couldn't have possibly been treated with any more care from every member of staff I saw the whole time during my hospital stay. Nothing was too much trouble and the endless questions from myself and my family (my son came over from Sydney to give my husband I support) were answered by the relevant teams of doctors and by nursing staff, in such a nice way, kept us very well informed the whole time, they were all truly amazing!

I was in hospital for two weeks and on discharge it was arranged that Silver Chain, occupational health, physio would all be looking after me at home, under the HITH arrangement. The care and empathy shown to myself and my family made the experience as least traumatic as it could possibly have been under the circumstances, through their thoughtfulness and care. I must also give a mention to the PCA's, who were all very helpful and nothing was too much trouble, although they were very busy.

I was recovering very well, slowly but surely when a few weeks later I developed a large  DVT in my leg and PE in my lungs. My GP sent me straight to RPH ED, once triaged (40mins wait) I was taken straight through to Critical Care in ED, where I was cared for with great efficiency and caring by the doctors and nurses there. After several hours, when it was deemed safe for me to be moved, I was admitted to AMU, where once again, everyone was really caring and considerate and nothing was too much trouble, I was in there for five days. The nursing staff at RPH are wonderful in my opinion, as are Dr W and Dr A who all looked after me so well.

Dear runningui35

It was lovely to read about your experience with Royal Perth Hospital (RPH). I was sorry to hear you had quite a serious health problem which required a complex operation and acknowledge how frightening parts of your journey must have been.

It was wonderful to hear you felt all the staff you interacted with were truly amazing. I am proud of the efforts of our staff to ensure a safe, caring and empathetic environment for all patients and their families.

Although it was unfortunate that you developed a large Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) a few weeks later, it was pleasing to read you were again treated with great efficiency and the doctors and nurses were really caring.

I will ensure your lovely feedback is passed on to the relevant department leaders to share with their teams. I know staff will be appreciative to know their wonderful care and treatment was recognised and valued.

I hope you are recovering well and extend my deepest appreciation to you for making the time, in such stressful circumstances, to share your feedback with us.

Kind Regards,

Ben Noteboom
