"Doctor in Emergency Dept"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Awful experience with a Dr one evening recently.

Upon arrival the triage nurse Chloe and her immediate assistance was absolutely fantastic. I arrived at emergency with a referral letter from my GP requesting urgent assistance for a stage 3 uterine prolapse. I completely understand and appreciate how busy the ED was and usually is, however what I cannot and will never understand is being told by the Dr that my stage 3 prolapse was not a medical emergency despite the enormous discomfort I was experiencing.

Prior to arriving at ED, I had been on antibiotics for a UTI which was not clearing. When I returned to my GP that same afternoon and explained to him the discomfort I was in, he conducted a pelvic examination in which he discovered a stage 3 uterine prolapse. He compiled a letter for me to present to King Edward’s ED for immediate assistance.

The ED Dr went on to tell me there was only one Registrar on site who was covering Labour ward and they'd consult with me if and when the had a gap but there was no guarantee of time or if I would be provided with any immediate relief such as a pessary or if I’d have to be referred to the clinic which list is in excess of a year long.

I felt my genuine concerns for my health and well being were constantly being dismissed and only when in desperation I became very emotional and asked to go home, did this Dr offer a word or two of comfort. The nurse who performed the bladder scan told me to see a physio, that would sort the stage 3 prolapse out.

It seems the only time my issue will be acknowledged is once it reaches stage 4 by which time I can no longer urinate and, as I understand it, probably go into renal failure and possibly sepsis, until such time I have no choice but to pray I get into the clinic before that happens as the care factor at King Edward’s ED was literally non existent in my opinion.

Dear Meekitty

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I'm truly sorry to hear about your recent presentation to the Emergency Centre (EC) at King Edward Memorial Hospital. It’s clear from your feedback that you were in considerable discomfort, and while it's reassuring to know that triage nurse Chloe provided excellent care, I’m very sorry to hear that the rest of your experience left you feeling so dismissed and worried.

We would really like to be able to review your presentation in more detail, and to ensure the appropriate arrangements are in place for your care. If you feel comfortable to, please contact our Consumer Liaison Team at 6458 1444 or via email at WNHSCLS@health.wa.gov.au.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Warm regards,

Delaney
