"Emergency treatment at Bright Hospital"

About: Bright Hospital / Urgent Care St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne

(as the patient),

On the morning of 31 Dec 2024 I attended the Emergency Department at Bright Hospital after severely cutting my RH thumb on a bench saw. I was immediately taken into care and assessed as requiring relatively urgent attention in the form of plastic surgery to save the thumb on my dominant hand.

As it was New Years Eve there were no doctors on duty so it fell to nursing staff to diagnose treatment and seek out and arrange for available surgical help and patient transport. This work, above and beyond her normal procedure, was carried out excellently by Lauren whilst she and Anthea and other staff did all the necessary things to diagnose, treat and protect the injury and keep my spirits up.

Only St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne had surgery available so that was duly arranged and it was decided that private car transport to Melbourne would be quicker than complex ambulance transport.

At every stage hospital staff were wonderfully supportive and even AH CEO Rhys popped by to assure me that St V’s would provide top class treatment based on his own experience.

Bright Hospital had appropriately forwarded required details of the wound to St Vincent’s Hospital and on arrival there I was assessed and informed of proposed surgery in a timely manner but due to their busy workloads I wasn’t operated on until the next day and subsequently returned home the following day.

At both Bright and St Vincent’s Hospital all staff were great and I can’t speak more highly of their professionalism and attention.

Bright Medical Centre also provided excellent post-op follow-up.

I am confident that initial care at Bright Hospital assisted in achieving the best possible outcome for my thumb’s rehabilitation.

Dear stumpy thumb,

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed and kind feedback regarding your recent experience at Bright Hospital. We are deeply grateful for your recognition of the care provided to you during your visit on December 31, 2024.

We are proud to hear that our nursing staff, led by Lauren and Anthea, were able to respond promptly and effectively to your injury despite the challenging circumstances on New Year's Eve. Our team strives to provide exceptional care, even when faced with unusual or time-sensitive situations, and we’re glad that their efforts had a positive impact on your experience.

It’s wonderful to know that the coordination between Bright Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne was seamless, and that the decision for private car transport to Melbourne was the best option for you. We are also pleased that you felt well supported throughout your time with us and that our CEO, Rhys, was able to provide you with personal reassurance during this difficult time.

Thank you once again for your kind words.

Kind regards,

Kristy Hinton
