"My hospital stay"

About: Tom Price Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was admitted with kidney stones in the morning. In severe pain. Had to have ultrasound, couldn't stop feeling nauseated and then it got to i couldnt even keep water down. Got the ultrasound done and was kept on pain management. The doctor on call at the hospital wanted to send me home that afternoon. I refused to go home. The nursing staff were excellent with my care. I recall the doctor tried to tell me the pain was in my head.

Next day the doctor sent me home, I recall stating perth were not interested in my results. I went home around after midday the day after admission. I was told there were 4 stones, 2 too large to pass. I was given a script for pain management.

I later that afternoon received a call from the doctor stating that they had just received my ultrasound report and that they were too large to pass and that I need to find my own urologist in Perth and make my own appointments to get this fixed. From the pain I was experiencing I asked if I could be flown by RFDS...they replied...youre ok, you have pain medication. Fly down yourself and go to emergency at one of the hospitals in Perth.

I was totally mortified to be told this. Lucky I could get on a flight the next morning to fly to Perth. That was the longest 2 hour flight ever. Upon landing I was again in severe pain. I had my parent collect me from the airport to take me straight to emergency at a different hospital. Luckily I had been able to get my ultrasound results to take with me. Presenting at emergency  my temp had risen to 37.6 and my markers for my kidneys were rising. I was dehydrated and not well at all.

The care from the doctor in Tom Price was borderline negligence, in my opinion. On that day when I was admitted and was vomiting bile, I believe I should have been put on a drip. The pain was severe and to be told it was in my head showed no concern on their part. It was like I was an inconvenience at the hospital. Even some of the staff were mortified that I had to find my own way to Perth. I found one of the doctors to be very unprofessional and uncaring. Offering valium for the flight, when flying on my own, was not the support from a medical practitioner that I required. I needed to be shown some sort of empathy at least. I felt that they didn't want to send me by flying doctor because it was an inconvenience and the doctor didn't want to be bothered with paperwork. I will be flying back in another 10 days to have the stent taken from my kidney and to have checks done that it has healed. Luckily, I didn't waste time getting to Perth for proper treatment. I know that we live a long way away from major hospitals but I believe it does not give locums the right to not give their best when required.

Dear geminiuy51,

Thank you for sharing your experience of your recent admission to Tom Price District Hospital and the care and treatment you received.

I was sorry to read that you felt like an inconvenience to the health service, and you found one of the doctors to be unprofessional and uncaring. Respectful communication is essential in providing person-centred care and I am truly sorry that you were felt unheard with the level of pain you were experiencing.

I would like to know more about what happened and initiate a thorough review with our clinical team. This will include the factors surrounding the decision for you to travel to Perth via a commercial flight. If you are happy to reach out, it would also support us to involve you in post-review discussions regarding any resulting outcomes and recommendations. Please feel welcome to contact me at your convenience on 08 9144 7777 or email at: Andra.Woods@health.wa.gov.au

I would also like to take the opportunity to let you know that if at any time you feel you or a loved one is not receiving the care or treatment they need, we have a process in place called Aishwarya’s Call and Respond Early (CARE) Call. This is for patients and their families and carers to escalate any concerns. When a CARE Call is made, a senior staff member listens to the concerns of the person making the CARE Call and makes a full assessment of the patient’s situation. The senior staff member then liaises with the treating medical team and other health care providers as required. If you should need it in the future, the Aishwarya’s CARE Call phone number for all hospitals in the Pilbara is 1800 431 143.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your story. I do hope you are recovering well and that I hear from you in the near future.

Yours sincerely

Andra Woods
