"Attitude towards BPD"

About: Rockingham Kwinana Mental Health Service (Adult)

(as the patient),

In the past I have been treated well, however, I'm tired of some Clinicians showing bias against me with my bpd diagnosis.

I am tired of some of them using the phrase " with your diagnosis" and then implying that my diagnosis is not worthy of their time. Even though the last Clinician I saw thought they were being kind, I left feeling dismissed and I feel very low and unworthy and as if the Clinic just sees us with that diagnosis as time wasters. I have always worked hard and being compliant but now I just feel like taking a heap of pills. I feel disregarded and as if I'm going to fall through the cracks again!

Dear braceb48,

I'm truly sorry to hear about what you're going through. I would like to acknowledge the hard work that you are putting in to manage your condition so it must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to feel dismissed and undervalued. Your feelings are completely valid, and it's important to recognise how hard you've been working. It's not right for anyone to make you feel like you unworthy of care, and I am sorry you have been made to feel dismissed. This is not the level of care and compassion we strive for.

I am concerned to read that your experience has made you feel so low, I encourage you to please reach out to someone you trust or contact one of the following mental health supports services:

Mental Health Emergency Response Line: 1300 555 788 (Metro) or 1800 676 822 (Peel)

Lifeline: 13 11 14

Beyond Blue: 1300 224 636

As Care Opinion is an anonymous platform, I invite you to contact the Consumer Liaison Office at rgh.feedback@health.wa.gov.au or on phone (08) 9599 4323, with your full name and details of your experience to allow us to investigate further and give you the attention you deserve.

Kind regards,

Tim Leen

Executive Director

Update posted by bracecb48 (the patient)

Thankyou for your response. I am concerned that if I do make an official complaint, I will be discharged from the service as I worry they will feel they can't do anything else for me, or I'm too dependant ( and there I ask the question, why do they seemingly feel being dependant on the service is only attributed to those with a BPD diagnosis? Can't someone with bipolar or other diagnosis also be dependent?).

I feel they will discharge me for being a problem patient if I make an official complaint.

I've just been discharged from a subacute short term residential service where I went because I was in crisis. The service excellent over the 30 days and saw me as an individual and worked collaboratively with me. But, since leaving I have had a change in Registrars at the Clinic and I feel the Registrar made assumptions about me and my diagnosis.

I believe the assumptions about BPD need to stop in this day and age!

Dear bracecb48,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. It's completely understandable to feel apprehensive about lodging your concerns. It's important to remember that your feelings and experiences are valid, and you deserve to be treated with respect and understanding. Listening to consumer feedback and concerns like yours shows that your needs have not been met, and it gives our service the opportunity to improve.

We believe that all consumer concerns and personal experiences should be treated with respect and dignity. I strongly encourage you to contact the Consumer Liaison Office at rgh.feedback@health.wa.gov.au. If you feel that you need support to voice your concerns, the Health Consumer Council of WA provides an advocacy service and can be contacted on 9221 3422 or advocacy@hconc.org.au.

Kind Regards,

Tim Leen

Executive Director
