"Cleanliness"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as a carer),

My spouse was a recent patient at Broome Hospital ,

Each time I visited I noticed at the entry to the hospital was littered with rubbish, takeaway containers , beer cans and cigarette butts .

They were in a 4 bed ward with a shared bathroom. None of the towels or laundry seemed to be collected or the bathroom washed at a regular basis. The external windows in the ward were full of dirt and cobwebs.

The grounds at the hospital are full of scattered paper cups and rubbish. The staff, were amazing all though I noticed they were constantly abused by some patients .

I believe a simple laundry skip in the bathrooms for used towels etc would help. I think bathrooms checks and monitoring on a regular basis would also help .

In my opinion, maintenance staff need to address the issues of littering and dirty windows and roster job allocations on a regular basis.

As a health facility, my initial impression of the hospital is not one of cleanliness and hygiene.

Dear Heart Scare,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns about the cleanliness at Broome Health Campus. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it helps us identify areas for improvement.

First, I want to sincerely apologise for the delay in responding to your concerns. I needed to gather information from our teams to better understand the situation, as this is a serious issue that we take very seriously.

I would also like to acknowledge the issues you raised regarding litter, the cleanliness of the bathrooms, and the condition of the windows. Your observations are valid, and I regret that you and your spouse had an experience that did not meet our usual high standards. We understand how important a clean and comfortable environment is for our patients and their families.

At the time of your visit, we were experiencing a peak in influenza cases across the community, which led to a significant increase in staff absenteeism due to illness. Unfortunately, this impacted our routine cleaning and maintenance schedules. While we strive to maintain daily cleaning protocols, this unforeseen situation made it difficult to fully meet our standards.

Since then, we have taken immediate action to address the situation. We have successfully recruited additional staff, and our cleaning and maintenance teams are now at full capacity. This has allowed us to ensure that our hospital is being maintained to a higher standard. We are also exploring ways to streamline the collection of towels and laundry, including ease of access to laundry skips in patient bathrooms, as you suggested.

We take the cleanliness of our facilities seriously, and I want to reassure you that we are continuing to focus on enhancing both the internal and external appearance of the hospital. Regular checks of the grounds and windows, along with increased attention to patient bathrooms, are now part of our routine maintenance.

Again, thank you for bringing this to our attention, and I apologise again for the delay in responding. We are committed to providing a safe and clean environment for everyone at Broome Health Campus, and we hope your next visit will reflect the improvements we have made.

If you have any further concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Kind regards,
James Sherriff
