"My sick child"

About: Derby Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my child to Derby Hospital for high temperature & seizure in their sleep & runny tummy.

I feel like they didn’t do enough tests to find out what was wrong or give them fluids when I asked.

I also asked to be kept in for the night, but they sent us home. I took my child back to ED that afternoon because they weren't getting better.

They just told me to go to the pharmacy to buy Gastrolyte. They still didn’t do anymore tests or offer for us to stay in.

I took my child back again the following morning because they were pooing blood. My child was sick for 3 days after I first took them in & became so sick that they wanted to transfer us to Perth, but we ended up going to Broome.

I feel they should have taken me more seriously when I took my child in on the first day so they wouldn’t have gotten so sick. In my opinion, they should have done their job properly.

Dear phoenixet64,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I appreciate that this has been an experience that has been distressing for you and your family.

I will speak with the departments involved and try to gain some greater clarity around the care of your child and how we can ensure our service is improved.

If you'd like to discuss this with me, can you please call the hospital on 08 9193 3333, and ask to speak with me.

Kind Regards,

Tammie Joseph
