"Unacceptable response from ed"

About: Bridgetown Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my baby to Bridgetown ed we are on holidays from the Pilbara. They had an ear infection and had finished antibiotics 5 days before I took them to ed they also had Covid when we went, in which I told them about straight away.

We were sat outside the hospital in the cold (it was a cold raining day and the wind was terrible). My baby had never been in under 25 degree temperatures in their life and we were left in the cold for a hour.

A student nurse was sent out to take obs and they were the only person to make contact with us, the other nurses stood at the door and did not check my baby no one looked in their ear which is why I was there I thought their ear infection had not cleared up I was told it was probably due to Covid and will go away on its own.

Then I was sent away no one looked at my baby or checked their ears and only one set of obs were done. My baby was running a mild temp which is under control with Panadol which they had a hour before attending ed so their temp was not high on the obs but I was not asked about when I gave it last or anything. 4 days later my baby's face swelled up they were in horrible pain. I have taken them to a Dr out of town and they were put on antibiotics due to an ear infection that I feel could have been resolved before my baby had to suffer all that pain if someone had of just checked them in ed instead of turning us away.

I feel like they heard the word Covid and stopped responding with appropriate medical care. What is even more frustrating is I spoke to a medical practice from out of town and they recommended me to present to ed and said even with Covid my baby is entitled to medical attention however we did not receive it in my opinion. I’m dissatisfied and disappointed in the Bridgetown hospital and their response to my 7 month old baby

Dear pelicanqf83,

Thank you very much for your feedback on your recent visit to our Emergency Department. Firstly, I sincerely apologise on behalf of the staff for making you sit outside with your unwell baby, this practice is no longer warranted for COVID positive patients.

I also must apologise for what seems to be lack of medical and nursing care whilst attending the department, and the distress this caused when your baby's condition worsened. In order for me to appropriately investigate your concerns and make true changes in our practice. I would really appreciate it if you could make contact with me so I can fully investigate this matter on 0437 884 247.

Bridgetown Hospital is committed to improving patient experiences with our service and do hope you will contact me at your earliest convenience and trust your baby has now made a full recovery.

Sincerely,

Helen Stuart

Dear pelicanqf83,

On behalf of Bridgetown Hospital staff, I sincerely hope your baby is fully recovered and wish to thank you for your feedback.

Due to your feedback the staff have been re-educated on infection control policies for COVID positive and suspected COVID cases. I have also had the opportunity to refresh the staff's knowledge regarding student supervision and expectations.

Constructive feedback gives us a fantastic opportunity to identify learning gaps and make changes. Unfortunately, your experience with our hospital was not optimal but due to your feedback staff have now greater understanding and increased knowledge, and you have contributed to a more positive experience for the next person.

Yours sincerely,

Helen Stuart
