"ED Program"

About: Mental Health Services SMHS / Cockburn Health

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Cockburn Health on the eating disorders program for a month and a bit.

Positive Experiences:

Peer Support: Gabi is an exceptional Peer Support Worker. Her groups were incredibly valuable and provided much-needed support throughout my stay. The 1:1 sessions with Gabi were also highly beneficial for my recovery journey.

Nursing Staff: Lauryn and Justin were outstanding nurses who provided excellent care and support, especially during meal support. Shout out to all nurses though.

Psychiatric Care: Dr. Aki was a good psychiatrist. Declan, the registrar, demonstrated a strong commitment to learning and provided compassionate care, despite it being his first time working with ED patients. I appreciated the opportunity to participate in my discharge planning, which helped me feel more confident and prepared for my return home.

Dietetics: They were great even though relationship between dietitian and the ED can be frustrating haha but obviously they want what is best for us as a person and recovery and not the ED.

Occupational Therapy: Sarah is a wonderful Occupational Therapist with a gentle and understanding approach. Working with her was a positive experience, even during challenging times.

OT assistant groups were also great.

Areas for Improvement:

Nursing Training: Some nurses may benefit from further training in specific aspects of eating disorder care. For example, discussions about diet, exercise, fat content, and sugar during meal support can be triggering for patients. It is crucial to avoid such conversations and instead focus on supportive and non-judgmental meal experiences.

Supplement Administration: Nurses should carefully review each patient's meal plan and individualize supplement drink amounts accordingly.

Overall, my experience at the Inpatient Eating Disorders Program was positive. The program provides a valuable service, and I am grateful for the care and support I received from the team.

Dear Confusedpatient567

Thank you very much for your constructive feedback, which we have shared with our senior medical, nursing, and allied health teams. Your feedback will certainly encourage them to continue their hard work with eating disorder patients at the new facility.

In particular, the senior nursing team would like to thank you for your feedback to support training, of at times junior nursing staff, and raising awareness in areas for improvement.

For your awareness we are continuing to ensure ongoing training sessions with WAEDOCS with a focus on therapeutic communication. Our Clinical Nurse Specialist and Dietetics Coordinator provide fortnightly toolbox training sessions for nurses to support development of these therapeutic communication skills working with the patients on the eating disorder stream, particularly during meal support. We appreciate the feedback regarding the supplement provision. Nursing will work together with dietetics to ensure the process is clear for nurses and patients.

FSH Cockburn Health staff are happy to hear you had a largely positive experience during your admission, we wish you the best of luck with your continued journey towards recovery.

Kind regards

Tim Leen
