Presented at our local Hospital in a small Wheatbelt town to have a rose thorn splinter removed. I was told that we have no tweezers or no scalpel so you’ll need to travel to Northam which is 120km away. Which I then did for fear of finger becoming infected. I recall the nurse at the ED Department in Northam was flabbergasted that our facility had no tweezers or scalpel to even attempt removal of rose thorn. The whole procedure took 4 hours out of my day.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are very sorry to hear about the difficulty and frustration you encountered while seeking treatment for your rose thorn splinter. We understand that your visit to our facility caused unnecessary stress and inconvenience, especially given the distance you had to travel to Northam.

The local hospital does in fact have the appropriate equipment to treat injuries like yours. But often it is a doctor who needs to use the equipment to remove a foreign body, a nurse could have attempted this under the direction of the Emergency Telehealth Service which is available at Quairading Health Service and I apologise that this option was not discussed or explored with you.

We are grateful that you were able to receive the necessary treatment in Northam, and we truly appreciate your feedback, which helps us improve the quality of care and service we provide.
