"Our demographic seemingly determines our treatment"

About: St John of God Midland Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My partner sought care at Midland emergency care only to seemingly be dismissed, ignored and spoken to rudely. They had a swollen tongue and may have sounded as though they were drunk or drug affected.  After they saw a nurse walk across the room with an open RAT test and not wearing gloves they decided to leave before contracting covid.

The next day they returned under instruction and with a letter from urgent care Dr stating they had Quinces and restricted airway. Again they received same care from the same nurse and was asked to leave without their letter because they swore to emphasise pain they were in (not at anyone).

I picked my partner up crying, distraught and extremely unwell. We returned to urgent care to get letter again and drove to another hospital that immediately recognised the danger my partner was in of restricted airways and sepsis and was treated with efficiency and care. We will always drive 45 minutes to seek care now. I believe it's disgusting and requires urgent attention before we seemingly kill people!

Hello Relieved Partner,

Thank you for bringing this important matter to our attention. We were very sorry to learn that your partner did not receive the care and support they needed during their presentations to the Emergency Department.

It was disappointing to learn that you felt your partner was not treated well. That is never our intention, and we would like to speak with you about the serious issues you have raised in your correspondence.

As you point out, quinsy is an extremely painful and serious condition, and we would like the opportunity to complete a review of your partner’s clinical care. To do this, we will need your partner’s name, date of birth and consent for the review.

We are keen to address your concerns so please contact our Patient Experience Team on 9462 4901 or via MidlandPatientTeam@sjog.org.au. We look forward to hearing from you so we can work together to resolve these issues with you.

Kind regards

Gail Miller
