I was sent to the hospital by my GP from Bright Medical Centre recently having displayed symptoms of feeling generally unwell and a really bad cough and respiratory problems over the preceding 3 or 4 days. I was admitted and remained there for about 8 days. The care provided by the nursing staff was exceptional - extremely professional, caring and attentive. I was told that I was in fact "very sick". Doctors were accessible and on-call if required and in fact at 4.00a.m. that morning i had a video conference call with a doctor on-call. Over the next few days my condition improved and the medical staff were able to work on diagnosing and working on other problems which were present. At this stage I should also say that the non-medical staff there were very good and caring and the whole team made it very clear that they were there to help me get well.
The main issue, as a local of Bright, is that the staff made it very clear that I should have presented to the hospital much sooner over the weekend because of how serious my condition was. However, I believe most of us locals don't realise just what a comprehensive (up to a point) facility it is and what an outstanding professional team is there. It seems we all think that the hospital is more like a holding facility for aged care or triage for sending patients to other hospitals e.g. Wangaratta. I feel the perception needs to change and importantly the hospital needs urgent need of upgrading, including x-ray facilities (which have all but been withdrawn) and much more which I'm not qualified to list.
Given the resources available to the medical staff and how run down the place is, I think everyone who looked after me did a first class job for which I thank them. I was not allowed home until they were satisfied I was ready.
Thanks to all, and please pass on my gratitude.
