"The staff at FSH saved our lives"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital St John Ambulance WA

(as a service user),

Two weeks ago at 3:30am I had serious bleeding at 34 weeks pregnant due to placenta previa. I was rushed to Fiona Stanley ED via ambulance. The paramedics were incredible and made the right decision to transfer me to FSH instead of KEMH because of how much blood I was losing. At the hospital I was greeted by so many health professionals ready to help me. I was scared and overwhelmed but to be surrounded by so many kind faces and reassuring words helped put me at ease. I was prepped and briefed for surgery and rushed through to theatre. I remember Jon the kind anaesthetist by my side the entire time talking me through what was happening and reassuring me I was in good hands.

I woke up the next morning in ICU and was told my baby boy was healthy and safe. Theresa my nurse was so friendly and kind as she looked after me, also Kendra and Tenika helped me so much especially as I began expressing colostrum and milk. The staff organised for me to be wheeled in by bed from ICU to the NICU to meet my baby and I’m so appreciative for their effort to make that happen.

Once moved to the Postnatal Ward I met so many beautiful nurses like Jane, Loren, Lauren, Danielle and the sweetest nurse who’s name I wish I remembered which started with the letter O (I’m so sorry for not remembering your name but you are the best!).

I had visits from the specialists who told me the story of how they saved my life. I had lost over 5L of blood and went into cardiac arrest. Dr Melinda, Dr Shilpa, Dr Jon and the rest of the medical team popped in and out during my stay to speak with me and make sure I was recovering well.

Once discharged I spent the next week and a half visiting my baby on the neonatal ward. I want to thank Bec and Helen for making me feel at ease when I first started visiting the ward. All the other nurses were wonderful too; Lisa, Heather, Phoebe, Armanté. I’m sorry for not remembering all your names! Thank you Brad the physiologist for talking with me about the trauma and ptsd I was experiencing.

Today I got to take my baby boy home! I’m beyond grateful to all the staff who helped me and my son and literally saved my life. Because of them I’m still here for both my sons and my fiancé. Words cannot express how thankful I am!

Dear couragefw45

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your son!

It sounds as though the first few weeks for you both were quite traumatic and far from what you had all been expecting as a family.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your gratitude to our staff. In your post, you so eloquently described the exact type of care we strive to provide to all of our patients.

As a tertiary obstetrics service, we do our very best to respond to all emergency situations with compassion and care and remain person centred.

It is heartwarming to know that we achieved this balance with you and your family.

We wish you all a great deal of happiness as you embark on this next chapter as a family!

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
