"Post op (colonoscopy) - abrasion to my eye"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as the patient),

Pre op was great, very informative and helpful. Put me at ease. Anaesthetist asked if I had reflux - told them I didn't.

Post op, came round - felt like I had been kicked in the head. I felt like I had something in my eye (left) which certainly wasn't there when I went under. I just could not speak my throat was dry and very sore - the nurse just said I had a lot of reflux! (bit strange as I had been fasting and do not have a history of reflux). As I was coming round things were very dazed, but I felt rushed and not comfortable to ask again as the nurse seemed to be in a rush to get me into the discharge room.

Whilst sitting there my eye and headache got worse. I had to ask the discharge nurse ( different to the previous nurse) for some Panadol - which they gave me. I told (whispered) them I could not talk and had a sore throat and the nurse told me it was because I had a tube put in during the procedure and it would go in about 24 hours. I went home and within a couple of hours returned to ED as my eye pain was excruciating and my sight in that eye blurry. ED Doctor examined and advised that there was an abrasion on my cornea and gave me antibiotic drops. How on earth did this happen? Obviously unintentional but I believe it happened during my procedure. Did something flick into my eye??

So a few days later I am starting to see more clearly out of that eye and the pain is lessening but it has been a very bewildering and worrying time. I am still sounding like I have a sore throat and that has not got any better. I have had anesthetics before and have never felt like this - the headache lasted for 2 days. I am not saying anything was done wrong or intentional, but I believe something / someone caused the abrasion on my eye and I felt like I could not ask what was going on as everyone was in a rush - I have made an appointment at my optometrist in a couple of weeks to check that there is no damage to my eye. I just wanted the team that looked after me at Bunbury Regional to be aware - that's all and that they may realise that something they may have done caused it so it does not happen again.
