I am a patient on ward 1A of the state rehab service at FSH. I feel the staffing of this ward is inadequate to meet the workload. The nurses are all fantastic, but it seems they are so over worked that they are unable to provide adequate care.
Some examples of where care has fallen short of expectations:
1. There was a time went I went for 4 days without being washed.
2. Last week I was suspected to have an infection, yet my observations weren't checked for 21 hours.
3. There are frequent medication errors, at least 2-3 per week just for me. Its Monday morning and I have already had a significant medication error for this week (incorrect medication given).
4. Creams prescribed on the medication chart are not being applied. The nurse simply writes an "S" to suggest self administered. This is despite 1 of my creams being applied to my feet, which I can not reach. And I don't even know where the other 2 creams are.
5. Call bells take a long time to be answered - one day I fell asleep while waiting for the call bell to be answered. One day last week I could hear a patient calling out as he was so frustrated about the call bell not being answered. When the call bell is answered, its often a student or AIN who can't assist you with the request anyway.
The staffing on this ward needs to be increased by at least 2 nurses on the morning shift and 2 nurses on the afternoon shift. Once again, individually all the nurses are great, but I feel they are just overworked.
