"Medical attention and pain relief"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to ED early evening and was called a few hours later. The doctor came in early the next morning and l told them that l was assaulted at work and l am having severe headache and chest pain.

The clinician who came to attend me refused to treat me and said it's something that happened 3 weeks ago that is not acute to get medical attention here. I was not even given any pain relief. I felt discriminated.

They did not check anything on me but I recall they told me they will go check or investigate anything. They did said because you have been in pain for days so there is no need of coming here because we take acute issues here. I felt discriminated and neglected. How is that a patient is not attend. Don't l have rights to medical attention especially when you have gone through assault. I believe this is not fair. It has impacted me mentally and emotionally drained. I am in pain and seemingly I can't be treated

Dear lyrapr75

I was sorry to read about your experience at the Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) Emergency Department (ED) and for the mental and emotional distress it has caused. It must have been awful to have been assaulted at your workplace, and to need to seek ongoing care related to this event. It was disappointing to read you felt that you were not provided with the care you were looking for when you came to our ED. You have every right to be treated with compassion, dignity and without discrimination when you attend our hospital and I’m sorry this wasn’t the case for you on this occasion.

I understand a member of our Patient Experience team has been in contact with you since your presentation and discussed your experience in detail. I have been advised that your concerns are being investigated further and the Team will feedback to you once the investigations are complete. If you have any further concerns in the interim, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Patient Experience team again on (08) 9224 1637 or via email: rpbg.feedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Thank you for sharing your story with Care Opinion

Kind regards

Ben Noteboom
