"Unprofessional and rude midwife"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as a parent/guardian),

I have an infant at bunbury regional hospital, and while a midwife was working I felt a very instinctual feeling to stay with my baby and not leave.

I felt they were very overbearing and wouldn’t listen to my wishes as a mum. I believe they were being very passive aggressive and talking to my baby as if they were being naughty and not being a “normal” baby.

I also had my parent come in for a visit and a cuddle - my baby was sleeping - the midwife then said we don’t touch sleeping babies and I disregarded what they said as it’s my baby and my choice with what I can and cannot do.

I recall they made very rude comments about the other mums and their babies who are also there.

I did not feel safe leaving my baby in this midwife's care and I stayed until their shift ended as I did not trust them to care for my baby properly.

I felt they also did not listen to my wishes as a mother and felt as if I wasn't doing the right thing… this situation has almost traumatised me as I believe they were very rough and mean with the delicate babies… it was not a great experience for my mental health - especially being that my baby is already in a compromised situation.

Dear februaryrd12,

Thank you for taking the time to share your Special Care Nursery experience at Bunbury maternity on Care Opinion. I do sincerely hope you and your baby are now settling well at home.

My name is Katrina Jones and I am the Clinical Midwifery Manager of the Unit. I wish to assure you that I have taken your feedback seriously, and will be investigating the behaviour and skills of the nurse involved in your baby’s care.

I wish to reassure you that it is important to myself and my staff that you feel safe and secure with the care that your baby is receiving at such a vulnerable time in their life. We aim to ensure that the care provided is of the highest quality, compassionate and evidenced based, in order to achieve the best outcomes for all babies in our care. I am sorry that this nurse did not provide this expected level of care and their personal behaviour caused you distress and anxiety.

I would like to provide you with personal feedback following my investigation so I would appreciate you making contact with me via katrina.jones2@health.wa.gov.au or via phone on 08 9772 1337 during business hours.

Once again, thank you for raising your concerns.

Katrina
