"My husband's care after a stroke"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Armitage House

(as a relative),

My Story is about My Husbands Care -

My husband had a hemorrhagic stroke - Choppered from Wonthaggi to Clayton Monash for a life Saving Burr hole, to relieve the pressure.

Came out of it ok, then was re intubated as could not Swallow - Spewton filled lungs & again his life was saved & Ever So Grateful!

Then onto Casey Monash to learn to Swallow, etc -

Casey Achieved - Swallow, Cough and Eat thanks to Mykala - Speech Therapist there, but so many tries at Catheter out etc -

As his wife, all the driving from Island to Casey makes you pretty tired, and lucky for me I could stay at my daughters to help with this.

I requested that he be brought closer to home (Island) so my husband was placed at Wonthaggi Hospital (Armitage house) He was still very frail, could not stand or get out of Bed still had Catheter etc - lots of Sponge Baths (Pullups = not nappies lol!)

Every Nurse, Physiotherapists Social Worker, OT Doctors - (Everyone) as he made more and more milestones, became a massive part of his turning point in Recovery - Even the Tea Ladies and Donny, with her hand therapy!! (Dates, she called them)

Maddy Jesse Luke Jen - Physio/OT and Speech the little things like Fran (Nurse) packing a lunch for me on the way in an ambulance for his first follow up at Monash Clayton -

So after 5 ½ months my husband's coming home, I his wife, am just so stoked, but scared too!! Besides all the NDIS stuff, Which is quite a navigational nightmare, and its terrific, (if) you understand any of it, which I didn’t, and my husband's not well enough to support me with emails, calls etc -

Then I am told he’s on a program Called GEM - Anxiety about (whats this) So I now know Hospital In the home, and all the physios, OT, Speech come to the home !! Wow - I’ve actually learned how to shower him safely amongst so much other stuff

Thanks Eve, Andi, Will, Claire and any others we may have missed - (Robert, Doctor)

The staff of BCH - have excelled above and beyond my husband’s journey to live a great life has now begun. Thank you BCH excellent work!

I really hope I didn't miss anyone! My husband's care was outstandigly excellent! And a lot of the staff became his Pals!!

Cheers, the wife xx

Dear leathermh54,

What a journey you and your husband have been on for the past 5 1/2 months. Thank you for taking the time to provide such lovely, well-deserved feedback for multiple health services, and especially for the BCH subacute team in Armitage House. They will be so pleased to know that they have made you and your husbands experience in the health system such a positive one with great outcomes. Now progressing to the GEM@Home program will assist his transition to the home environment after such a lengthy time away.

I will pass on your wonderful feedback to the whole team and thank them for providing high quality care and reflecting the BCH values.

We wish you and your husband all the best for the future.

Kindest regards,

Chris.
