"Triage"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I had to visit the ED Department recently.

I think the triage has been set up terribly. I was fortunate enough to be provide the lovely Triage nurse with all of my details with no one else around. Unfortunately the poor lady who was in front of me was unable to do so. She was struggling to talk, could barely move her head and looked to be in a great deal of pain. The nurse was asking for personal details which could in normal circumstances could be heard in the triage room. The young lass could barely talk so the nurse was asking her to bend down near the gap of the window and desk. This was problematic as she really struggled.

The young mum, who came in after her with the screaming baby, was asked to provide all of her details.  The entire room could hear everything.

There is no consideration for privacy when being triaged. Why would someone design an area like this where personal details can be heard throughout the area.

In my opinion, this is the worst and should be changed.

Dear lyracc34

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion.

We acknowledge that the layout of the ED triage desk and waiting area limits confidentially. However, our staff, as you noted, do their best to maintain confidentiality.

We have made an immediate change to put some distance between the triage desk and the seating area for patients awaiting triage. There are a number of spaces or rooms within the department that can be used to increase privacy and we have discussed this with the nursing leadership team, who will work with their triage team to make sure that everyone is aware of them.

Your feedback has been very helpful to us, and we will continue to look at longer term solutions to this issue.

Best wishes
