The majestic old eucalypts are still there and the Ovens still flows smoothly and quietly between its banks but the bridge is gone.
The old Nimmo Bridge I cycled across on my way to primary school over seventy years ago, is simply not there. I know of course it has been rebuilt a short distance upstream. Now, nestled comfortably beside the river and looking across the green grassy paddocks to the township and hills behind, is the most wonderful gym station. It is a bright, shiny new gymnasium firmly based on a royal blue carpet and just begging to be used.
When I answered the call to come and try it out; to meet Maureen the leader; Leeah the physio and all the other interested, curious, wanna be ‘get fitters’, I realised what a special place this was and how lucky I was to have it available and free for me.
I think Maureen is a ray of sunshine and lifted our spirits the moment we arrived, encouraging us and assuring us we would cope. Leeah was able to explain and then modify any exercise for those with particular issues of movement. We used all the equipment, everyone at their own level of ability, made new friends, challenged ourselves to remember all the new names, and were very comfortable together when the session drew to a close and we all met up for coffee at the local café.
The free outdoor gymnasium is a wonderful initiative and my appreciation and heartfelt thanks go out to those who made it possible.
