"Getting older."

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital

(as the patient),

My husband died when I was 67 and this event seemed to send me into a spiral of health problems. While these problems were easily treated a routine eye test was to prove more challenging!

I was sent for a series of eye examinations which determined I had macula degeneration. This lead to a period of depression. At 70 years of age I felt totally vulnerable and unsure of what to do. Having a very supportive family, I was guided to Sydney Eye Hospital.

Still unsure of what I was to undergo, I felt it extremely daunting. However, the hospital and staff were so helpful that I found it a little easier to see things in perspective and to take one day at a time. After visiting the hospital monthly for regular checks and eye injections I was accepted in a Macula Research Group-Clinical Trials Unit. This continued for a period of about a year and I have just ended my trial.

I really wanted to express my gratitude and state what a wonderful group of people I had looking after me. Everyone on the team were just so kind and professional, and made my visits bearable. I now am having my eye injections every 16 weeks, which has made life so much easier.
