"Foreign Body not removed after multiple procedures"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Outpatients Clinic Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

We attended Bunbury Hospital ED for our toddler in a few months ago with glass in their foot. They were taken into ED and sedated with the attempt to remove the glass which was unsuccessful. They were admitted to the peads ward and taken for surgery the next day. During surgery the ortho surgeons cut the bottom of my toddler's foot open and removed what they stated was the entire foreign body.

4 days later the stitches came out, we took our toddler back and this is where their trauma has come from. The Dr made us pin them down and refused to sedate my toddler to restitch their foot, the 'quick' stitch took 15 minutes of myself and a nurse pinning down their little body while they screamed no stop.

My toddler now will scream from the moment we see a medical professional even if they aren't there for them until the moment they leave. Makes it hard to take myself or my other child to the Dr's if unwell.  At review I told the ortho Drs that my toddler wasn't walking properly out of their moon boot to which they told me that they were just sore.

This month we drove 2hrs and took our toddler to a metropolitan hospital they were still complaining of pain to find there is still glass in their foot. This now means a 3rd procedure, more time off daycare and loss of income to our family with another child who has high medical needs!

Dear correspondence00,

I am so sorry that you had this experience at Bunbury. I would like to apologise for the way your child was treated and left so frightened by the experience, as well as not having the glass fully removed at the time.

We do strive to give compassionate, professional care to all of our patients but in your case, this does not appear to have been done correctly. To better understand your individual case and follow up, I would like to make contact. We can discuss the specifics of your experience and work on ensuring that this is not repeated for anyone else.

Please feel confident to contact me on 0436279568 or via email to Karen.horsley@health.wa.gov.au

Yours sincerely

Karen Horsley

Service Co-director
