"Bad sports injury left untreated"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Sustained a nasty finger injury playing football and presented to Kalgoorlie ED after 2 days. Initially I was seen and treated within 2 hours, which they attempted to put my dislocated finger back in place. I was told there was also a communited fracture with bony fragments floating around, but was sent home without being seen by ortho's. (Kalgoorlie would eventually follow up with me 2.5 weeks later for a consultation appt. Further scans in Perth a week later showed that my dislocated finger wasn't actually put back correctly into place by Kalgoorlie ED).

Sought a second opinion from two hand Perth clinics and was told it would need immediate surgery or risk serious damage. Presented to another hospital a week later as a new patient after an attempt to get a referral from Kalgoorlie hospital never came through.

Once at the other hospital, I had a great experience at the plastic's department as I was seen to and operated on within 48 hours. They told me that if I hadn't traveled to Perth at my own will, my finger left untreated for weeks could have been a disaster.

I have can have sympathy for country hospitals due to lack of specialised services locally, but 2.5 weeks to be contacted and seen for this injury even after I requested a referral to Perth was very disappointing. If I hadn't sought a second opinion and traveled to the city, I believe it could have been a lot worse for my finger.

Dear lupused89

Thank you for reaching out to us about your experience accessing clinical services here at Kalgoorlie Health Campus. This really does provide us with critical information that we need to keep improving our services and how our community access them as smoothly as possible.

From your story I believe there are multiple steps we can take to improve our communication with patients about their care pathways. I hope you are glad to hear, that some of these have already started. For example, now all patients that present and are treated in the Emergency Department (ED) for an orthopaedic injury, that do not require an inpatient admission, are provided with the information for the Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinic and are fast tracked to be contacted for a follow up review within a five (working) day period.

I would also be very happy to review your clinical case specifically and look at any further opportunities for learning and improvement. If you would like this to occur, please reach out with your details to gsegcg@health.wa.gov.au.

I hope your hand is now healing well and again I am sorry that you did not receive the care and follow up that you needed at the time of your injury.

Kind regards Alicia
