"Missed miscarriage"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Attended KEMH Emergency with spotting. Was interviewed at Triage by a nurse/midwife, admitted then interviewed by student doctor, then interviewed by doctor. I had no pain, fever, BP was normal but I told them I couldn't feel my pregnancy symptoms and had started spotting at 445pm. The doctor examined my abdomen that was all. I was told I would get an observation of my cervix I think to check that there was blood etc.

The next thing the doctor came back and told me they had spoken to an obstetrician (I think that what they said) and they were not concerned so to discharge me unless I insisted on having the test. I asked if they at least check if baby had heartbeat and they said no. I was discharged two hours after admission.

I went home not knowing if my baby was okay, only to get continued spotting the next day and though KEMH was the nearest, I was reluctant to return there as I felt no reassuring assistance had been offered. I rang another clinic and organised an urgent ultrasound myself only to learn that I had a missed miscarriage that KEMH could have identified had they at least checked for Heartbeat.

Since getting pregnant, as a high risk, I thought a referral to KEMH would be reassuring for proper care as my catchment area, mine being Rockingham, but sharing my experience with a friend, I learnt that they presented to a different hospital with spotting at 20 weeks, they conducted sonogram, identified miscarriage and offered D & C which she consented to rather than going home with dead baby in a their womb. The least I expected at KEMH was just to at least know if my baby was alive.

Dear BMTtillwemeetagain

I would like to convey my condolences to you and your family for your loss, and express my sincere regret for how your experience at King Edward Memorial Hospital added to your distress at such a difficult time for you and your family. It is clear from your feedback how the lack of reassurance provided during your visit impacted you, and I am sorry this was your experience.

I understand that you have already contacted our Consumer Liaison Service directly with your feedback, and that a review into your presentation to our Emergency Centre is underway. A member of our team will reach out following this review, and if we can provide any further assistance in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact us on (08) 6458 1444.

Kind regards,

Delaney
