"Kitchen refusing to make meals for my dietary requirements"

About: Sale Hospital / Medical Service/Ward

(as the patient),

I recently had gastric sleeve surgery at a metropolitan hospital in Melbourne. They were wonderful.

I was subsequently brought to my local hospital in Sale (Central Gippsland Hospital)  with a blood clot in my spleen. The kitchen were told that I needed a low/no salt(sodium) free liquid diet.  They were also told I do not have sweet or sugary foods.

Their answer to this was to give me, sustain, custard and jelly. When told I would not eat those as they are sweet and high in sugar, they started sending salty broth then yoghurt.

Today I have been given yoghurt for breakfast and lunch,  and apparently I am getting the same for tea. I have had to have my spouse get an outside source to make something for me to have.  I asked if the kitchen could make a soup without salt, eg cauliflower or pumpkin and blend it smooth. The answer was no. I asked for porridge that was blended, like they gave me at the metropolitan hospital as a breakfast and was told no.

Dear AnonCW

Thank you for sharing your experience with us as an inpatient at Sale Hospital.

We appreciate your feedback regarding the challenges you have encountered in accessing meals that accommodate your dietary requirements. Your feedback provides an opportunity for us to review our processes and identify where improvements can be made that strengthen our delivery of patient care.

Please accept our apologies that on this occasion, we did not manage this as well as we could have.

It is essential in the delivery of healthcare that we provide patients with a diet that supports their recovery, noting your recent gastric sleeve surgery and the subsequent blood clot in your spleen.

Your experience would indicate that a communication breakdown has occurred in that our Food Services team did not receive (or correctly interpret) information regarding your low/no salt (sodium) free liquid diet and nil sweet or sugary foods.

We would be pleased to review this matter in detail if you felt comfortable contacting us directly. This would enable our Food Services Team and Dieticians to review not only what has occurred, but ensure that the meals you are provided with moving forward are suitable for your dietary needs.

This may involve a Dietician and/or our Menu Monitor having a direct conversation with you about how we can provide you with the best possible dietary options to aid you in your recovery.

Please feel free to advise the Nurse in Charge if you wish to speak with the Menu Monitor, or contact me on 5143 8194 for assistance in arranging this discussion.

We wish you all the best in your continued recovery.

Kylie Fairbrother (On behalf of the Director Corporate Services)
