"ED seemingly over stretched"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I came in to ED recently with post operative issues. It seems to me ED is extremely stretched, no beds available for patients admitted to be moved out of ED. Patients are being housed in treatment rooms & along the corridors as there is no where else for them to go.

They were so short of room I recall my bed had to be placed blocking a fire safety door. Space was so tight they couldn’t get some beds past down the corridor to radiology or elsewhere.

Staff have been amazing & are doing their absolute best under what I feel are appalling conditions.

Dear courageme56

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion regarding your recent experience in the emergency department of Albany Health Campus. We have shared your post with the ED and Hospital Leadership teams. We appreciate your acknowledgment of our staff, who consistently perform admirably under challenging conditions.

We regret that you had this experience and agree that keeping patients on beds in corridors is not ideal for either our patients or our staff. Like many hospitals across Australia, Albany Health Campus has experienced a significant increase in activity over the past five years. Our primary goal is to transfer patients from ambulances to the ED promptly, ensuring ambulances are available for other community emergencies. Once patients are in our waiting room, we assess their condition to determine the urgency of care required and prioritize their admission to the department accordingly. Unfortunately, there are times when the number of patients exceeds the available beds, but we work collaboratively with all Multidisciplinary team to ensure patients are transferred to the appropriate place at the right time.

Thank you once again for your feedback. We are committed to improving our services and ensuring the best possible care for our patients.
