Choosing to give birth at King Edward Memorial Hospital under the care of the Aboriginal Midwifery Group Practice (AMGP) was the best decision I could have made for myself and my family. From the moment I met Mel at 16 weeks pregnant, I knew I was in safe, capable hands, and the level of care and support I received from her, along with Nel and Sally, was nothing short of extraordinary.
Mel guided me through every step of my pregnancy with such warmth, wisdom, and calm. She was always there, whether it was to answer a late-night question or to offer a comforting word when my nerves got the better of me. I never felt alone in the process. She had this unique ability to blend professionalism with a deep sense of empathy, which made me feel truly heard and understood.
When the day finally arrived for our daughter 's birth, Mel’s presence and encouragement made all the difference. The labor was not too long, and I felt calm, grounded, and supported every step of the way. Even when things got a bit intense, Mel and the team navigated everything smoothly and with such grace.
One memorable moment was when Claire, the coordinator, came into the room and realized I was the first mum to spontaneously give birth as part of the MyTime trial! It was a funny moment during what is typically the most intense part of labor. But the whole team, from the midwives to the doctors, created an atmosphere where I felt safe and empowered.
I truly can’t say enough about the exceptional care we received at King Edward. The hospital itself was clean, organized, and provided a supportive environment throughout the entire birth experience. I also appreciated that I could go home so soon after my daughter's birth, which allowed us to settle into our new family dynamic in the comfort of our own space.
To anyone considering the AMGP program or King Edward Memorial Hospital for their birth, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. Mel and the entire team made this experience one that I will treasure forever. They are an extraordinary group of women, and I will be forever grateful to them for helping bring our daughter safely into the world.
