"Pedeatric ENT inappropriate conduct"

About: Child Development Team (E.H.) (Great Southern) Great Southern Aboriginal Health Service

(as a parent/guardian),

Attended a Pedeatric ENT appointment at Great Southern Aboriginal Health Service.

I entered into a small consult room that barely fitted myself, pram, my child, the staff member from GSAH and the ENT.

I felt the ENT was blunt in their line of questioning. They would ask what my child's symptoms were and subsequently interrupted me to tell me what my child's symptoms were. When I corrected the ENT, I was told I was argumentative.

The ENT conducted physical examination on my child and summised that there was nothing wrong.

Given there had been irregular ear pressure readings during Child Health Nurse visits that lead to Pedeatric Audiologist referral and a further irregular test results, resulting in a subsequent referral to the Pedeatric ENT.

I stated this to the ENT and they claimed the tests I was referring to were normal and provided an offer for a follow up in six months time.

The ENT then stated that I did not seem convinced.

I responded that I am a law student and focus on evidence and the evidence was inconsistent.

I recall the ENT raised their voice and started:

I'm a scientist! I'm a surgeon! I'm a doctor! I base everything on evidence!

I was in shock at their response and I looked to the GSAH staff member who looked equally shocked.

I continued to try and clarify my concern regarding the inconsistency and the ENT kept being abrupt in their responses and stated again that I was being argumentative.

I said to the ENT that I apologised if I gave that impression but I was trying to clarify the inconsistency.

The ENT kept being abrupt in their responses and I stated 'I'm not sure how this consult has devolved to this point' and the ENT said bluntly, they were not sure either!.

It was at this point I noticed I was shaking and it wasn't good for anyone to remain in that environment, so I stated that I felt this consult needed to end as it wasn't appropriate.

As I exited the room I heard the ENT state to the GSAH staff member, No further appointments!.

I went to the reception and asked to make a complaint. I was handed a feedback form and I sat in the waiting area. I was shaking so much that I could barely write my name. Another GSAH staff member came out and checked on me and said, you're not usually easily rattled like this.

I handed in the feedback form and the staff on reception said it would be communicated to the clinical manager.

I left the GSAH still in shock and shaking.

I returned home and informed my spouse who was outraged at the way I had been treated.

Dear GreatSouthernMobMum

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We deeply regret that your visit to the Paediatric ENT at Great Southern Aboriginal Health Service was distressing and unsatisfactory. Your feedback is invaluable, and we are committed to addressing the issues you raised.

We sincerely apologise for the discomfort and frustration you experienced during the consultation. It is concerning to hear that the ENT’s communication was blunt and dismissive, and that your attempts to clarify your child’s symptoms and test results were met with resistance. This is not the standard of care we strive to provide.

We understand the importance of feeling heard and respected, especially when it comes to your child’s health. Your feedback highlights significant areas for improvement in our communication and patient care practices.

We would like to conduct a thorough review of this incident to look for opportunities to improve and to ensure that such experiences are not repeated. Please consider contacting me, Charlotte Munro, on 0409159689. We are committed to providing a supportive and respectful environment for all our patients and their families.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We value your input and are dedicated to making the necessary improvements to better serve our community.

Yours sincerely
