"Inadequate transport"

About: Broome Health Campus

(as the patient),

I go to Broome Hospital to have my intravenous drip canister refilled. I’ve been doing this for 5 weeks and I’ve got 1 more week to go and the nurses at Broome Hospital are terrific I’ve never met a bad nurse, they’ve bent over backwards for me and do such a wonderful job.

The only downside is there’s no transport service to get to Broome Hospital. Silverchain said they don’t have the resources to do it so I need to get there on my own but the thing is the antibiotics they put me on means I’m not able to drive, but I do because I have no other way. The antibiotic itself makes me very lethargic and tired, I asked for a service to get me to the hospital and they are unable to provide any transport. Its about a 15 min 20 min drive every morning.

I want to make clear that the staff provide great service and do an excellent job, but downside is I don’t have any available transport.

The last time the hospital was renovated was in 2008 and its population at this time of year for a small tourist town doubles with everyone coming up from Perth. I feel the population is overrun and on Saturdays and Sundays I have to go to the ED and they do the job there. The staff there do a wonderful job but the services for transport there is very inadequate especially if I’m not feeling well, I’m still forced to drive. I’ve tried with silver chain too but they don’t have resources.

Dear lupusbd68,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the transport challenges you’ve faced in getting to Broome Hospital. We genuinely appreciate your kind words about our nursing staff and the care you have received.

I understand the difficulties that inadequate transport can create, especially when you're feeling unwell. We have approached the local public bus services multiple times to request a route change to include the hospital, but unfortunately, they are privately owned and have not been willing to adjust their routes.

In response to your concerns, the hospital does offer some limited transport services for clients where possible. I would be happy to discuss this further with you to explore any options that may be available. Please feel free to contact me directly at 9194 2854 or james.sherriff@health.wa.gov.au.

Thank you again for sharing your experience, and I hope we can find a solution that better supports your needs.

Best regards,

James Sherriff
