"Lack of neurodivergent awareness and privacy boundaries"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Outpatient Services

(as a parent/guardian),

Our older teenager with very recent diagnosis of ADHD (inattentive) and querying ASD had a follow appt that was not their primary paediatrician. The follow up was to see how they are adjusting on the trial medication as it is a 'black box' prescription.

We always ask who the pead will be when rung to make appt to ensure continuity, and was caught off guard with a different pead. We've made it very clear we would wait for our usual pead on many many occasions as our teenager becomes mute and disengages and doesn't communicate when there is a change in providers.

We are a very educated neurodivergent family and understand the needs of our children and that is why we always advocate for continuity to ensure our child gets the most out of their reviews to ensure the best treatment before they age out of the clinic.

This appt in question did not go well at all.  Questions that could have been asked in front of their other parent who had been asked to leave the room.  However questions that should have been asked in private, away from that parent (eating disorder the parent didn't know about) were asked in front of that parent!

As a result, my teenager became mute, embarrassed, shut down, disengaged and disregulated. The  appt was waste of time and recourse and they had to repeat info the main pead already knew.

My teenager left with no repeat script of the medication they are trialling, told to keep on going as main pead had in place,  and that they would organise  a review just before their 18th bday where they will be booted from the system.

My teenager was left deeply impacted. They texted me from the car so angry and upset.  Their words were 'For someone who is supposed to know that ADHD people don't like change and don't like being put on the spot - why did they do that to me'.

The pead seemed to lack awareness regarding neurodivergence and the best way to approach it. They did not respect my teenager's privacy, revealing additional information to their other parent without their consent. This is something their primary pead would never have done. My teenager's usual pead always treads very lightly, respects their privacy and asks before divulging information to me as a parent.

I have since spoken to reception who advised that this pead is new to the pead rotation. I have a level of empathy for that, however strongly feel that some reflection and education may be needed to better the peads further studies/rotations.

So here we are now, no closer to a goal. Have to wait for another appt in a few months and 4 days of medication left. So I am not sure who we even have to go to for another script. Is our regular gp allowed to prescribe? I have no clue.

Please do better. Please be better. Treat our neurodivergent children with dignity and respect. You've now caused an even bigger trust issue, a bigger issue as it already had been hard to get them to attend appts and speak about their 'issues'. What hope do I have now of getting my teenager to trust their paediatricians??
