"Bilateral wheeze"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my child to the Kalgoorlie health campus recently at roughly 1pm.

They were admitted immediately due to a very obvious Bilateral wheeze that the triage nurse confirmed and expedited my childs admission. They were also informed that my child was sick a week prior to the ED admission, and that a day before admission my child had an episode where they essentially stopped breathing and went completely limp and purple before administering ventolin, and that my child’s other parent has Asthma.

Upon arrival to the paediatric bay, myself and my child were met with an unsanitary bay – I believe due to under staffing issues and an emergency that occurred prior to my arrival - that was cleaned immediately to a satisfactory standard.

Unfortunately, this is where the support from the kalgoorlie health campus declined. A doctor entered the room and performed a stethoscope exam on my child’s upper back and chest area, and a throat exam, to which they told me my child’s lungs sounded ‘crystal clear’ and ‘their throat is completely fine.’

The doctor went on to explain what they believed was the issue, and when i expressed to the doctor that i was not happy with their Diagnosis of seemingly ‘we do nothing’, I recall they very rudely told me that they are the doctor, and if it makes me feel any better they can fetch another doctor to come in and tell me the same thing.

I felt the doctor’s demeanour from the get go was arrogant and disgusting, and this is the 2nd or 3rd formal complaint I have had to make about this hospital and the 9-10th trip I've regretfully made without receiving any answers.

To the ED nurses on shift at the kalgoorlie Health campus, I applaud you all.

Truly i do not believe how i can bring a child into a hospital showing very clear signs of respiratory distress, have them confirmed by the triage nurse and then have a seemingly egotistical doctor come in and, in my opinion, essentially call myself, and 2 other nurses stupid.

I believe people have died from this type of negligence and ill be damned if my child became an example of that!

Dear Bigfumes20

Thank you for telling us about the experience you had with your child at the Kalgoorlie Hospital Emergency Department.

I am sorry your child has been so unwell, and that you felt the medical staff treated you badly. I hope they are now feeling better and that if they need any further care, you will take them to your GP, or if it is an emergency, bring them up to the ED. I am glad you felt supported and advocated for by the nursing staff on this occasion. If you ever need to ask for a clinical review or support in accessing care, you can also speak to one of the senior staff members in our service, 24 hours per day, by calling the Aishwarya’s CARE Call line on 1800 976 123.

If you would like me to follow up with a review of your child’s case and a conversation with the treating doctors I can do so. I will need to know your child’s name; you can contact me on gsecg@health.wa.gov.au and I can make these arrangements.

Kind regards Alicia
