"Emergency Dept - Admin + Doctors"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Called Bunbury hospital emergency department in regard to a script received on discharge at 6am 2 days before. Doctor who discharged me said if I had any issues with any of the scripts I’m to call or present to emergency. Misplaced my antibiotics script either in ED or at home, admin put me through to the doctor in charge which I explained I had been discharged at 6am with the script only for them to tell me very abruptly this is inappropriate use of an emergency department and I am to see your gp. (it was a public holiday so how am i supposed to see a GP when the chemist is the only place open in town).

In my experience Bunbury emergency department staff (admin, nursing and medical) I've seen or talked to are very careless when dealing with patients in vulnerable situations. In my opinion, management need to take a look at their service delivery and amend it as I believe some people resort to anger/frustration and in my case, would prefer to just go home and suffer as I feel Ed is useless.

Hi festivitywe83,

I am sorry to see that this has happened to you, and I hope you have recovered from the events that led you to our ED.

Work in ED can be busy, demanding, chaotic and at times frustrating, but feedback like yours is important as it gives me the chance to reflect on your experience, and do everything I can to discuss with the other health care workers here how to improve it for the next patient.

I wish you all the best, and again, if you'd like me to investigate your specific case, please contact our Regional Coordinator of Consumer Feedback on (08) 9753 6537 or email swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Yours sincerely

Dr Hugh Mitenko, MD, CCFP-EM (Canada) | Deputy Medical Director, Bunbury Emergency Department
