In September my brother passed away in the ICU at SCGH. He had been unwell for a long time but it was still unexpected as he had been doing reasonably well.
I cannot speak highly enough of the care given to my brother, but also how the team on duty that night guided us as we stood there bewildered and not really knowing what to say or do for my brother.
In his final hours, he was treated with such respect and received the best care possible, I think the ICU nurse's name was Georgia - she even found a playlist of my brother’s favourite music and placed it next to his ear and quietly played it in his final moments.
Around 12 years ago, I was also treated for breast cancer at SCGH and, again, the level of care I received was exemplary. I have shared these two experiences widely. I’ve had several friends diagnosed with breast cancer since then and have assured them they couldn’t be in better hands at SCGH.
Both experiences were significant milestones in my life and I’ve often thought how incredibly lucky we are in Australia to have this level of medical care available to us. In other countries, my brother would have passed much earlier. The extra time he had allowed him to share some wonderful times, with my mum in particular, and she is so grateful to have had that extra time with him.
Thank to you the wonderful staff at SCGH, particularly to the ICU team and Georgia (I hope I have her name right!). I know over the past 2 years the team at SCGH did everything possible for my brother. I did say this on the night he passed, but I know my brother, Paul, would also like to say thank you for the care, and extra time, he was given.
Thank you.
