I recently had a phone appointment with a skin specialist. I suffer with eczema and am currently going through TSW. I am currently trying to find the root cause of my eczema which is why I booked this appt. Within the appointment I was told TSW is not real and that I should continue using steroids as there are 'no side effects'. I disagreed and told the specialist I wish to explore options that are not harmful to my body. That is when they prescribed me tacrolimus cream, I was told there would be absolutely no side effects- which I later for myself found was incorrect. Tacrolimus is an immunosuppressant; therefore, it works by stopping my body from functioning at its highest level in order to see temporary results. The cream gave me acne and burning sensations whilst showering which left me debilitated after trying to complete a simple task.
Further research proved tacrolimus has many other health risks and has been linked to skin cancer and bacterial infections as the body cannot function and fight off bacteria. I do not believe anyone should ever be lied to, as I feel I was, especially when asking if there are any side effects. especially those in fragile states and already suffering enough as it is. Not to mention the cream was $200. This experience was a waste of money and time and left me with no trust for the public and now private health system.
Medical professionals need to state the risks and side effects of medicine to ensure patients can decide whether that is the option and risk they are willing to take.
