"Overnight admission to hospital"

About: Margaret River Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Despite starting to feel better after experiencing a strange mix of symptoms, I went to the doctor. Received a call after dinner, well after the end of his work day,  because blood test results warranted further investigation.

Took myself off to ED. So glad staff persisted despite my arguing that I didn't have pneumonia.

Couldn't fault the service provided by any of the staff I saw in ED or after I was admitted that night.

I do wonder how health outcomes are improved for anyone who is attached to machines that go ping constantly, even with the earplugs provided. Surely it would be possible to have silent machines, only emitting a noise if there is a change in the reading or an emergency.

Dear atlaszr86,

I am glad to hear that the staff at Margaret River hospital provided you with great care.

The staff take immense pride in the service that they provide to the community.

I was sorry to hear of your lack of sleep during your hospital stay, due to the noisy monitor, despite wearing ear plugs.

Hospitals are noisy places; they are active 24 hours a day, so it is very hard to create the 'healing' environment overnight and at other times.

I understand that sleep quality is an important part of someone’s recovery, and even though hospitals are generally busy environments with lots of lights and noise from machines, patients and staff, rest times should be recognised as a quieter time on the ward, when possible.

It is important that our patients feel comfortable to raise these types of concerns with the ward staff during their stay so that we can make their admission as comfortable as possible.

I will ensure that your feedback is used as an opportunity to remind staff of the importance of minimising disturbances at night for patients whenever possible.

Once again thank you for getting in touch with us and I hope that you are feeling better, and I wish you all the very best on your recovery.

Regards,

Sandy Znidarsich
