"Feeling ignored and in pain"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a friend),

A friend presented to Karratha Health Campus in severe pain and felt they were not taken seriously. They were triaged and the nurse was talking to other staff during this and they felt that the staff weren't listening to their presenting complaint. People coming in after my friend were having their observations checked and no one checked on them, no pain relief was offered

Dear disinfectantcx98

Thank you for sharing your friend’s story of their experience when presenting to the Karratha Health Campus Emergency Department. What you describe is substandard to the level of care each patient, their carers and family should expect regardless of how, when or where they access emergency care in any of our health services. Quality, compassion and community are just a few of the values our organisation and all staff should consistently uphold, and it certainly sounds like this was not the case during your friend’s visit, and for that we are truly sorry.

We take your feedback seriously, and I am happy to discuss this in further detail should you or your friend wish to contact me. All feedback is treated with confidentiality, and we can certainly accommodate the preference to remain anonymous. The opportunity to have a discussion would help me gain a better understanding of what occurred and how it made your friend feel. There is also the potential to improve how we can all make sure our patients are felt cared for and heard, and their pain is acknowledged and addressed appropriately. You can call me on 9144 7639 or email me via Paula.Jolly@health.wa.gov.au

I hope to hear from you in the near future.

Warm regards,

Paula Jolly
