"Positive Birth Program"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Maternity Ward

(as a service user),

My partner and I did the Positive Birth Program in person at the Kalgoorlie Hospital. Amy was the teaching midwife, she was fantastic and so was the entire program!

This is our first baby, so everything is new to us. My partner said it was very informative and he feels a lot more relaxed about the entire process as he now knows what to expect. I loved doing the program together as I feel we are more of a team now then ever before. I had done a lot of birthing research before the program but I found the information and the videos extremely valuable and I wouldn’t have this extra knowledge without doing the program. I would recommend that every mum and birth partner attend this program in Kalgoorlie and we both feel extremely lucky to have been able to do so. Thank you to Amy and all the wonderful midwife’s at the Kalgoorlie Hospital and also WACHS for providing the program to residents.

The only negatives I found was that the Kalgoorlie hospital does not have a MGP program or offer home births. We lived in Alice Springs before moving to Kalgoorlie which has a much smaller population and they offer both of these options.

Kalgoorlie hospital also don’t have birthing pools which is incredibly disappointing and I believe should be an option for all birthing mums in the area.

We also did a tour of the unit and I was a little shocked at how clinical the birthing rooms are. They felt similar to an operating room.

I worked as a clinician at another rural hospital and looked at the birthing units there and the rooms were much larger, had a homely feel and it did not feel like I was even at the hospital. This other hospital also has a much smaller population, so I am unsure why WACHS has not provided similar facilities to the Kalgoorlie hospital.

Dear Kalgoorlie mum to be,

Thank you for reaching out to us. I am so glad both you and your partner found the Positive Birth Program so useful and informative. I agree, Amy is fantastic. It is wonderful to hear the difference she and her colleagues are making, supporting families here in Kalgoorlie with this newly implemented service. I hope that all expectant parents take your advice and engage with the Positive Birth Program as part of their own birthing journey.

We are always looking at ways we can improve our service. Whilst we have managed to achieve some small steps in softening the labour delivery rooms, we continue to plan for improvements we can make in the future and have certainly made a note of your suggestions.

If you would be open to being involved as a consumer in further discussions about changes or have any further enquiries, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me on 9080 5817 or via email gsegcg@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Alicia
