"Giving birth and postpartum care"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Maternity Ward

(as the patient),

Had a very traumatic birth, felt midwives didn’t give me any support and disagreed between each other. Had arguments in the room when my babies heart rate dropped, if they will give me a c section or not. Once given birth I couldn’t walk but yet was told I needed to get up and look after my baby as I’m a mother and that’s my job. When my legs were still numb from the epidural they kicked my partner out right after giving birth because it was out of visiting hours even though I needed help to even stand.

My child was put in the intensive care nursery which I cried about several times and I recall was told I needed to stop that and get over it.

Honestly worst experience I’ve ever had and would never go back to this hospital unless it was a life or death situation.

Dear rainpm79,

I am so sorry for the experience that you had. I agree this would have been very traumatic and can understand your fear and reservation about having to attend hospital again. I hope you have been able to overcome such a stressful time and enjoy and bond with your new baby at home.

I also wanted to make sure you know about the community-based child health services that are available in Kalgoorlie-Boulder for new parents. These include New Parents Groups and drop-in clinics too. You can get all the details by calling 9080 8200.

If you would like to reach out to me directly to talk in more detail about the care you received and the improvements that we could make to services at Kalgoorlie Hospital, please don’t hesitate. You can contact me on 9080 5817 or email gsegcg@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Alicia

Dear rainpm79,

I spoke to our Clinical Nurse Manager of Maternity this morning about your story. She also expressed her regret about your experience. She asked me to reach out to you and make sure you were aware of the post traumatic birth debriefing appointments that can be arranged for any women that would like them. This service has been implemented at Kalgoorlie Hospital as a direct result of feedback from mothers who would like the opportunity to review their birthing journey with one of the obstetrics consultants. If you would like to access this service, please call the clinic on 9080 5626 to make and appointment.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you would like to discuss anything else that we can do to support you or any other improvements we could make to services at Kalgoorlie Hospital. You can contact me on 9080 5817 or email gsegcg@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Alicia
