About: Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

I was admitted to a country hospital then transferred to Fiona Stanley to have a transfusion. I fasted for four days before finally receiving a transfusion and a further scope. I was an inpatient at Fiona Stanley Hospital for six or so days and moved into three different rooms during this time. Each time I was told that the room was needed by someone else. Another time, I was woken at 3am by staff to be told that again, my room was needed by another patient. I was moved into a "short stay room" mixed of both male and female patients, with little to no privacy available. Other patients were walking around and watching me when I tried to rest. Several of these patients were coughing up their lungs.

I raised concerns about the lack of privacy and feeling uncomfortable, to be told by nursing staff that no offence was intended. Absolutely nothing was done to rectify or support my needs.

I am an older Aboriginal person who has been made to feel less of a person in this experience. It's a pretty big thing when you're a country kid coming into the city, and you expect to be looked after, not treated like a 2nd or 3rd class citizen, as I felt I was, because you don't know the rules of the city. This shouldn't be happening - it's not 1966. The whole experience was traumatic and, I felt, inhumane.

After the events of the morning, the day only got worse. I was scheduled to fly home via REX the same day. They searched me prior to getting on the plane for no reason. No explanation for the search was provided, so I kicked up.

While sitting on the plane, I was advised that my documentation had not been filled correctly, and it was possible that I would be removed from the aircraft. The pilot called the doctor - I was frightened they would kick me off the plane for something that was completely out of my control.

If it wasn’t for the Lovely old lady sitting next to me who said, "Don’t worry mate things are going to look up, we will get out of here", I would have been in tears.

Dear corridorsq37

I am sorry to hear of your experience during your recent admission to Fiona Stanley hospital. I can imagine what you have described would have been unsettling for any patient, particularly so when you are a long way from home.

There are parts of your feedback that we would like to investigate further to learn if we can improve on how we care for patients in the future. It is not possible to do this without your details. I encourage you to contact the Fiona Stanley Hospital Patient and Family Liaison Service on 61524013 and request to register this as a formal complaint. We will be able to provide you with a response to the issues you raised once we have completed our investigation.

Regards,

Neil Doverty
