"Mental Health"

About: St John of God Midland Hospital / Emergency Department St John of God Midland Hospital / Ward 4A (Adult Acute Mental Health Unit)

(as the patient),

Absolutely awful treatment and breach of my rights. When I was in the ED I was told by the Mental Health nurse that I was not wanted there, and despite being incredibly clear that I was not safe to go home they tried to send me home.

I was admitted despite being told they were going to do everything in their power to send me elsewhere. I believe they did lie and say it was only an overnight bed to get out of the ED - the staff on the Mental Health ward seemingly had no idea about this when asked and I ended staying two weeks.

When I was discharged (by a Psychiatrist who was not my treating Psychiatrist) I told them I did not feel safe or ready and that I was really scared because I was still actively at risk, to which they said you can go to the ED but you're not staying here.

If it weren't for professionals from the private sector going above and beyond and working complete overtime I have no doubt that I would've been dead. I felt the treatment by the discharging Dr was so rude, demeaning and awful, I left in a worse condition than I arrived in.

Upon discharge I was not given a discharge summary. 5/6 months later when my GP still hadn't received it, it was sent to. I found out I had been given a diagnosis that no one had told me about and has a specific recommended treatment.

When I asked how I fit the criteria no one could give tell me specifically and I feel there was nothing in the discharge summary or FOI notes that rationalised the decision. Without knowing this diagnosis it was impossible for me to have given true informed consent which is both my right and a requirement under the Mental Health Act Voluntary treatment. I have completely lost all trust in the mental health system and my treatment by SJOG Midland put me in a worse place than when I presented and really impacted my recovery.
