My friend got sick overseas and the Port Fairy Medical Centre and hospital has been extraordinary to us in getting her back from overseas as she’s terminally ill. At the Port Fairy Medical Centre the general manager Karen has been a very helpful, calm and steady hand. Dr Andrew from the hospital has advocated for my friend and stayed in touch with me. He’s coordinated her care and spoken to her oncologist, he’s also written letters to the bank who require this to enact the power of attorney.
At the start I wasn’t quite sure, I’m her medical power of attorney and I thought maybe I should bring her closer to me in Geelong, but they kept encouraging me that they would look after her. This hospital has kind of been a shining light in the desert. I wish I could remember all the staff’s names, but I remember there was a Virginia. From the nurses to the tea ladies to the cleaner (it was so clean!) they were all so kind, they treated my friend like a person and I’m sure they were busy but they never behaved as though they are.
They notice all the small details and go out of their way for my break, like trying to find food for her. One tea lady even said if my friend can’t eat what they have she will make sure she finds her something she will want- even offering to bring something in from home!
I’ve just been overwhelmed by the place it looks amazingly clean and there is an enormous feeling of harmony. It has restored my faith in the medical system and if I could list all nurses’ names would, I’m yet to find anyone who’s not kind there, it seems to be some sort of beautiful cultural alliance and you can tell how much they care and how important their work is to them.
The GP has also been popping in to see me on the weekend and he’s not paid for any of that, he’s been responding to all my emails and the staff all speak so highly of the doctors there. They’ve just been so good, I’ve been blown away so wanted to pass it on.
