"Birthing/labour experience"

About: Osborne Park Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

We had our rainbow baby at Osborne Park Hospital and the experience wasn't the greatest. It's left a small whole in my heart for all the different things we were expecting and hoping for that didn't happen or were taken from us because of lack of communication, lack of empathy, or general poor care. We were mucked around for nearly 24 hours.

Then once in the labour ward we had many disappointing things occur. My third support not being close to me during the whole process, not being allowed to take pictures, everyone talking about what's going on and not telling me what's going on. I was terrified and felt so unsure of everything. It was scary. And I didn't feel as safe and comfortable as I have with my previous births.

Dear membernq69

I am so terribly sorry to hear about your experience at Osborne Park Hospital, and I would like to recognise the courage it must have taken to reach out to share your story. I regret very much that the care we provided did not support you to feel safe and comfortable during the arrival of your rainbow baby, and for the impact this had had on you and your family.

Your story reflects the importance of providing specialised care and support to mothers and families who are navigating pregnancy and birth after a loss. We are currently exploring how we can better meet this need, and we’re committed to partnering with our consumers to do so. If you would like to provide further feedback on your experience to assist us with that process, our Consumer Liaison Service (WNHSCLS@health.wa.gov.au), would be very happy to put you in touch with one of our senior midwives to discuss further.

Once again, thank you for reaching out, and for giving us the opportunity to better understand the ways in which we can improve the care we provide.

Kind regards,

Delaney

Hi Delaney,

Thank you for your response. I would love to be able to assist with the process of improvement as I feel it's so important to create a safe place for all birthing mum's but a more specialized care for those experiencing birth after loss. I will send the liaison team an email.

The care we received on the labour ward from various staff cannot be faulted. There are some aspects that just didn't sit well with me which some loss mother's may not have been able to handle the way I did.

Again, thank you for your reply.
