"Hospital horror"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Acute Medical Unit

(as the patient),

The first 2 nights of my recent stay were fantastic, the staff being very helpful under what I believe to be great stress and understaffed conditions.

Then it all changed, I noticed that once my mood and symptoms were getting better, everything got worse. To the point in which if asked for help, (etc" I'm in serious pain"), I would be told  it would be in 10 minutes. 4 hours later I might even a chat. If that. I felt that the patients in my room were vulgar, racist, aggressive and down right rude

EG. "that ******* young white fell next to place their music all night long."

(actually, I played mindfulness white noise on my noise cancelling earphones.)

I was called anything from one slur to another, I am neither indigenous nor Jewish. I was told to shut up and laugh it off.

The food, which knowing I wouldn't receive great things from a hospital, I felt would probably give Jetstar airplane food 3 Michelin stars by comparison.

The bathrooms are disgusting in my opinion. Felt that taking a shower would make me dirtier.

The last straw was that at asking all day for a physician about see me about referral to a certain private hospital, I never received one. Since then my 4 person room seemingly turned in a makeshift office and training room. I'm trying to avoid an abusive (violent, emotional and financial) relationship (towards me) whilst I go through a breakup and maintain my sobriety, for which this was the key.

Again, whilst some of the staff were fantastic, others I wouldn’t trust to take care of a leaf.

I have nothing but respect for Ambos, Paramedics and nurses, but there seems to be something wrong with this system..

But when you tell your nurse that you are in severe pain and they hold up the palm of their hand and says not my problem darling, you kind of lose faith in my experience..

Dear augusthx96

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

I was very sorry to read of your recent admission to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) and the disappointing ward experience you had. The comfort and safety of patients, staff and visitors is important to us at the Royal Perth Bentley Group (RPBG) and it was concerning to read of the negative interactions you had with other patients in your room and a member of nursing staff. Patients are encouraged to raise any areas of concern directly with the Nurse Unit Manager or Shift Coordinator during admission, so that they can be addressed at the time and I apologise if you were not made aware of this.

I understand that you have already spoken with a member of the Patient Experience team who have provided assurance that the issues you raised were sent to senior clinical staff for review and appropriate action. The issues you raised in relation to catering and cleaning were also escalated with the Catering Manager and Patient Support Services Manager for their own internal review and to ensure consistency in the delivery of their services. The RPBG strives to deliver the best care and I would like to sincerely apologise that this was not your experience of our service.

I would encourage you to maintain contact with your General Practitioner so that they can provide you with any additional community support that you may feel you need.

I wish you all the best in your continuing healthcare journey.

Kind regards

Ben Noteboom
