Firstly, I would like to acknowledge all of the staff that was involved in my care during my 24 hours at SCGH. The main standout for me was how kind everyone was. I was treated with care from the moment I entered the emergency department to the moment I left the hospital ward and this says a lot considering how insanely busy and stressful it seemed to be.
A special mention to my ward nurses Brooke and Abbey who went above and beyond to check in on me and always had huge smiles and great communication. Their care meant the world to me after a very difficult morning and they truly made my experience smoother. Both are slightly newer to nursing but their positivity, charisma and sense of connection made me truly feel heard and seen.
Another standout was the surgeon who was assessing me, Dr Jonathan. He gave me hope that there are doctors in this hospital who understand and care about the well-being of patients. Thankfully Dr Johnathan seemed to have a holistic approach to care. This gives me much greater confidence now to return to this hospital in the future if needed.
My only constructive criticism would be more communication between the patient and the treating staff. There seemed to be a massive lack of communication between the emergency staff who were caring for me and the passing on of information. This made me feel incredibly uneasy. At times I felt completely neglected and forgotten about whilst staying overnight in the emergency department. I wasn't acknowledged by the nurses on the night shift who seemed to stay up all night seemingly gossiping until one spotted me trying to head to the bathroom, even then there seemed to be very little check-ins from them. In the morning I ended up in tears and on the verge of panic due to a lack of communication about my situation. All it would have taken was one nurse or doctor to come and let me know what was going on and what the next steps were and I would not have nearly gotten to the point of wanting to leave.
Aside from this and the sheer time it took to get looked at and to get all my scans done (understandably so and nothing the hospital staff can change) I really felt overall -- considering how busy the hospital was-- that my care was satisfactory and I left knowing that I was going to be okay and everything that could have been done was done. I appreciate all the hard-working staff who continuously try their best during a very difficult period of time for healthcare workers.
