"Doubtful all care was taken"

About: Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

I am in the unenviable position of having my only child currently serving a prison sentence in the local maximum security facility.  They did some dumb things as a teenager and now have to pay the price. These crimes do not define who they are.

All services everywhere are under pressure, I know this, people slip through the cracks all the time. My child was recently the victim of one such person and had a kettle full of boiling water thrown at them. They ended up in the ED of the local hospital having emergency surgery to debride the entire surface area of their chest, under their arms and up their neck and face, duly shackled and escorted at all times by two prison officers.

My child's stay in hospital has not been pleasant, I believe their dressings have been inadequately changed, often needing them to request the help of the officers guarding them to redo the dressings.  Four days later they were being discharged from hospital, wounds still weeping and bleeding, back to the care of the prison, to rely on god knows who to monitor their wounds and help my child care for them.

I hope that my child does not have to return to the hospital with a massive infection through being discharged too early - I would be very skeptical of them receiving the care they require if they do.

As is always the case, it was not everyone my child encountered, just a select few that seemed to have an axe to grind and make their authority felt.

Dear devoparent

Thank you for sharing your child’s experience on Care Opinion. I am truly sorry to hear about your child’s situation, and I understand how distressing this might be for you. Every patient has the right to receive safe and high-quality care and it concerns me that you believe this was not the case for your child.

I would like to review the care your child received, and I am happy to discuss this further with you. Would you consider contacting me, Eliza Mathew? My email address is eliza.mathew@health.wa.gov.au or you can contact me via phone on 0437 513 314.

I really hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes.
