"IBD Clinic being unavailable"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I was having a Colitis flare and needed assistance urgently as the flare was rapidly getting worse.  Having tried my GP to no avail. I tried my IBD clinic support phone line at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, their email and other lines of communication to try and get help but I believe the helpline had been discontinued due to resource issues, the email was only being 'read' once per week and the Specialist was in procedures.

To my disappointment, frustration and ever declining health this meant I ended up in the Emergency Department, only for 7 hours later for the Emergency team to contact an on call IBD Dr at SCGH for instructions.

Why did it even get this far?  Where was the SCGH resources to avoid an emergency health situation?

Dear neptunegb59,

I am sorry to hear that you were unable to access the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital IBD service phone line when you required assistance urgently, resulting in you ending up in the Emergency Department.

In April 2023, the IBD clinic support phone line was unfortunately closed due to staff unavailability. I understand how frustrating and distressing this experience must have been for you, especially as your condition was rapidly worsening. I am happy to advise that with the commencement of an additional resource, the phone line was re-opened this month, improving accessibility and communication for those in need.

Thank you for your feedback, and please accept our apologies for the inconvenience and distress this situation caused. We are committed to ensuring that all patients receive timely and appropriate care, and your input is invaluable in helping us improve our services.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
